On the Campaign Trail: Day 1

Day 1 was a great first day to the campaign. It started early with lots of candidates gathered at Union House early to save spots for their banners. At 9am, we were able to officially unveil our banners and start campaigning. My team and I started putting up posters along the Street and in Union House, before setting up the Facebook page (www.facebook.com/KirstyforAcademic) and starting to talk to students.

I learnt a lot from talking to students about what they thought of my policies and what other changes they wanted to see. I spent some time talking to a group of student parents studying Psychology, who especially liked the idea of earlier reading lists and exam timetables, so they can get their reading done sooner around their caring responsibilities and plan childcare around exams. Many other students I spoke to responded especially positively e-submission and improved IT services. We all know how frustrating it is when you're on campus and a page won't load because of the slow UEA wireless, or when you're rushing to print an essay and the printers are (yet again) not working. I will work to make sure the standard improves, so that we have IT services that are fit for purpose.

In the evening, I visited Norfolk Terrace, armed with a box of joint manifestos to distribute and my pack of flyers. It is always good to get out and talk to students, especially since many of those living in the halls are first years and so are unfamiliar with how the elections work. I was also able to speak to a variety of international and postgraduate students and discuss how my policies would affect them.

Bring on day two! :)
