Today was another busy day, and as more posters are put up and more candidates speak to students, many students are finding out more about the elections, the candidates and their policies. The day began with Kath, on my campaign team, putting up more posters and putting flyers in the Hive and Pub in preparation for the rush.
Doug, another team member, and I spent several hours speaking to students in and around Union House. The weather was beautiful, so there were many more people outside to talk to. My policies have been generally very well-received and my ideas have developed as a result of getting feedback from other students. I spoke to some MED students who explained that their different semester dates mean they lose out on some benefits many other UEA students get, such as the Waterstone’s 10% discount during the first few weeks of the traditional semester. Also, since MED students don’t finish until July, the restricted opening hours of the library during the summer mean they can’t use it as much as they need to. If elected, I will work to see if it is possible to increase the summer opening hours during the summer. This is not an issue that only affects MED students, but also postgraduate students and others who don’t follow the traditional semester dates. I also chatted to a mature student who commutes to Norwich, and he said that e-submission would greatly benefit him.
The afternoon involved some necessary library-time, before I headed to Nelson Court to chat to more students. An important part of what candidates do, in addition to promoting their own policies, is to inform the student body about the elections, when voting takes place and how to vote under our voting system. Students in Nelson Court liked my policy of improved IT facilities, and many had experienced the regular frustration of trying to use printers that often don’t work.
Another good day. Tomorrow we will move to different areas of campus to talk to students who don’t necessarily spend time at Union House.
